9 People Died as a possible Result of Trump's Capitol Riot?

4 Trump Supporters

Two heart attacks: According to an April release from the Washington, D.C., medical examiner’s office, “Stop the Steal” protesters Kevin Greeson, 55, and Benjamin Phillips, 50, both died of cardiovascular disease, and the manner of death was deemed “natural.”

An accidental overdose: D.C. police also said on the day after the riot that Rosanne Boyland, 34, of Kennisaw, Georgia, suffered a “medical emergency.” A month later, the D.C. medical examiner’s office released its conclusion that Boyland had died accidentally of “acute amphetamine intoxication.”

A shooting death: Ashli Babbitt, 35, of San Diego and an Air Force veteran, died on the day of the riot after being shot in the shoulder by a Capitol Police officer while protesters “were forcing their way toward the House Chamber where Members of Congress were sheltering in place.”

5 Law Enforcement

A stroke victim: A Capitol Police release the day after the riots said that USCP Officer Brian Sicknick “passed away due to injuries sustained while on-duty.” The report stated that Sicknick “was injured while physically engaging with protesters. He returned to his division office and collapsed.”

Four suicides: Four other police officers committed suicide in the days and months after the riot.

The first was U.S. Capitol Police Officer Howard Liebengood, 51, who had been guarding the Capitol for 15 years and was on duty at the Capitol on Jan. 6. He took his own life three days after the riots.

Several days later, D.C. Police Officer Jeffrey Smith, 35, who was injured in the riots on Jan. 6, also committed suicide.

Smith’s wife, Erin, told the Washington Post her husband related to her the fear and panic he experienced the day of the assault on the Capitol, and that he was afraid he might die.

In defending the Capitol, Smith was struck on the helmet by a metal pole thrown by rioters. Later that night, his wife said he went to the police medical clinic, where he was prescribed pain medication and put on sick leave.

Smith’s wife said he “wasn’t the same” in the days after the riot and seemed to be in constant pain. After visiting a police clinic on Jan. 14 and being ordered back to work, Smith shot himself on the way to work, the Post reported.

On March 7, the District of Columbia’s Police and Firefighters’ Retirement and Relief Board declared that Metropolitan Police Officer Jeffrey Smith’s suicide in the days after the Jan. 6 riot was a line-of-duty death. The board concluded “that Officer Smith sustained a personal injury on January 6, 2021, while performing his duties and that his injury was the sole and direct cause of his death.”

In July, six months after the riot at the Capitol, two Metropolitan Police Department officers who responded to the Capitol on Jan. 6 committed suicide.

According to People magazine, Kyle DeFreytag, 26, was not involved with the clashes with rioters during the breach of the Capitol, but was deployed to the Capitol to help enforce the curfew put in place after the mob had been cleared from the building.

The same day the Metropolitan Police Department announced DeFreytag’s death, it confirmed that another officer, Gunther Hashida, had also committed suicide.

Approximately 140 police officers were assaulted January 6 at the Capitol, including about 80 from the U.S. Capitol Police and about 60 from the Metropolitan Police Department.

NEVER FORGET HOW TRUMP'S TERRORIST INSURRECTIONISTS DESECRATED OUR COUNTRY'S SACRED CAPITOL AMERICAN FLAG WHEN THEY TOOK IT DOWN AND REPLACED IT WITH A TRUMP FLAG

Trump promised pardons to his J6 terrorists

If elected in 2024, Former President Trump said he will pardon January 6th rioters convicted of sedition, conspiracy, and assault against law enforcement.

Trump added that he will issue an official apology to many for how they were treated by judges and juries that convicted them.

"I will look very, very favorably about full pardons. If I decide to run and if I win, I will be looking very, very strongly about pardons. Full pardons," Trump said, adding: "We'll be looking very, very seriously at full pardons because we can't let that happen. ... And I mean full pardons with an apology to many."

He also noted that he is financially supporting some of the rioters being tried for their crimes on January 6, 2021, saying “It’s a disgrace what they’ve done to them. What they’ve done to these people is disgraceful.”

2021: Trump first tried to shift blame

There’s no proof antifa stormed the Capitol. Some claimed the riot was driven by left-wing antifa activists in disguise. There was no evidence for this on Jan. 6, and no evidence has been found since. The rumor spread quickly anyway. We dug deeper into claims that specific individuals were antifa activists; they turned out to be Trump supporters. We also found a right-wing echo chamber that aggressively pushed the false antifa narrative.

FACT CHECKS: Trump blames Nancy Pelosi for his Insurrection

Fact-checking claim Pelosi ‘takes responsibility’ for not calling National Guard on Jan. 6, 2021

CLAIM: Video shows Rep. Nancy Pelosi “takes responsibility for not having the National Guard” at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021

In a brief video, then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., said, "I take responsibility for not having them just prepare for more," referring to U.S. Capitol security, not the National Guard.

No member of Congress has the authority to activate the District of Columbia National Guard. Only the president, defense secretary and U.S. Army secretary do.

Records show that Pelosi approved a Jan. 6, 2021, request to seek support from the National Guard and pushed to get National Guard troops to the U.S. Capitol when their deployment was delayed by hours that day.

Putin Defends Trump and his Insurrection

“When people entered the Congress after the well-known elections in the U.S., they came with political demands after which more than 100 criminal cases had been launched against them. Judging by the charges against them, they are facing long term imprisonment – from 15 to 20-25 years and maybe longer.” ~Vladimir Putin

Trump's Oath Keepers

Some of the rioters were members of organized militia groups like the Oath Keepers and the Proud Boys. They had military training and came to the Capitol organized and with armor, tools and weapons. In some cases, their expectations were that once they entered the Capitol, Trump would use the active military to take over the government.

WHO ARE BOOGALOOS, WHO WERE VISIBLE AT THE CAPITOL AND LATER RALLIES?

Among the most visible ideological adherents at state capitol protests after Jan. 6 and in Richmond, Virginia, on Jan. 18 for pro-Second Amendment rallies were people involved with the boogaloo movement, easily recognizable in most cases because of Hawaiian-themed shirts and masks along with their weapons, signatures of boogaloo followers. The shirts are a reference to “big luau,” which is an adaptation of the word “boogaloo.”

ProPublica and FRONTLINE have identified more than twenty members with ties to the armed forces.

The boogaloo movement’s most extreme white supremacist element is ratcheting up calls for civil war.

Guy Reffitt Texas Freedom Force

Guy Reffitt, of Wylie, Texas, was arrested by the FBI on Sunday in connection to the January 6 US Capitol riot.

According to a charging affidavit, Reffitt threatened to kill his children if they told the FBI he had taken part in the riot.

Guy Reffitt, who the FBI says is part of a far-right extremist group called "Texas Freedom Force," was arrested on Sunday and charged with knowingly entering or remaining in any restricted building or grounds without lawful authority and obstruction of justice.

Tucker Carlson’s ‘Patriot Purge’ film filled with falsehoods, conspiracy theories: Of all the media personalities who denied the significance of the Jan. 6 riots, none spoke louder than Fox News’ Tucker Carlson. In segments on his Fox News show and in an on-demand series called "Patriot Purge," Carlson promoted multiple conspiracy theories, including that the day was instigated by left-wing activists, that it may have been an FBI-led false flag, and that the government was using it to strip millions of Trump voters of their constitutional rights. PolitiFact debunked these claims in detail

Fact Checking Insurrection Lies of Trump and his Republicans

A day of crisis at the US Capitol, fact-checked: As Jan. 6 unfolded, we tracked many claims about election results and who was to blame for the Capitol siege. Trump was wrong that he had won the election by a landslide; he’d actually lost rather decisively. He also said Vice President Mike Pence had the power to overturn election results; that, too, was False

A Pentagon-National Guard timeline for Jan. 6: Democrats described a three-hour delay in response from the National Guard to what was happening at the Capitol. A review of public testimony and other documents suggests that is essentially accurate. However, our detailed timeline shows there are some nuances, including two separate delays in response.

What happened during the call between Trump and House Republican leader Kevin McCarthy? On Jan. 6, McCarthy called Trump to talk with him about the chaos at the Capitol. What was said on the call remains something of a mystery, but sworn testimony later suggested McCarthy was angry with Trump’s nonchalant response.

When ‘patriot warriors’ were fed lies: By June, we had pieced together more evidence about who participated in the Capitol riots and their motivations. We read court records, looked at online profiles and interviewed friends and family of rioters. We found people were drawn to Washington that day for myriad reasons. Many were everyday Americans who shared false beliefs in a stolen election and an array of conspiracy theories.

How many newly elected officials and congressional candidates were part of the Capitol riot? At least 10 people who were recently elected to public office appear to have been present in Washington, D.C., on Jan. 6. Another seven who are running for Congress were as well. It is not clear that all of these people entered the Capitol or themselves were active participants in the riot. But one congressional candidate, New Hampshire Republican Jason Riddle, faces federal charges for his actions that day. Riddle has pleaded guilty to two charges, demonstrating in a Capitol building and theft of government property. Other charges are pending.

The Jan. 6 committee tries to get to the truth about the attack: After failing to get bipartisan support for an independent commission, House Democrats pushed through a select committee. Republicans have largely shunned the commission, with two exceptions: U.S. Rep. Adam Kinzinger of Illinois and committee co-chair Rep. Liz Cheney of Wyoming. Though very different in background and politics, Cheney and Democratic co-chair Bennie Thompson of Mississippi have teamed up to lead the committee’s work.

How Fox News hosts told different stories of the attack: As Trump supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol, three Fox News hosts texted his chief of staff, Mark Meadows, calling on Trump to speak out. But the alarm raised by Fox News hosts Laura Ingraham, Sean Hannity and Brian Kilmeade was a striking departure from the public comments they delivered on the Fox News airwaves. On various programs, they played down the violence and, in some cases, suggested that antifa may have been to blame.

The 2021 Lie of the Year: Every year, PolitiFact picks one falsehood as the most important, pervasive or harmful. This year, PolitiFact picked lies about Jan. 6 and its significance, for two reasons. First, the attack was historically important; a federal judge called it "the most significant assault on the Capitol since the War of 1812." Second, the events of Jan. 6 were widely broadcast, allowing the public to see for itself exactly what happened. So efforts to downplay and deny what happened are an attempt to brazenly recast reality itself.

Ongoing fact-checking: We fact-checked dozens of individual claims about the Jan. 6 attacks. More will be added as we complete new fact-checks.
